The Traditional Settlement of Agios Mattheos is a large, picturesque village of southern Corfu, 23 km from the Old Town of Corfu. It dates back to the 16th century when in the area where the current village of Agios Mattheos is located, Barbarossa and his pirates looted and destroyed the original village called Zygonos. The remaining residents sought security by building the new village amphitheatrically, in the mountainous part of the area.
You will wander around the picturesque alleys - where Venetian style blends with Ionian architecture - and you will feel like you are in the back cantons of the Old Town of Corfu. You will admire its history through the old stone houses of two-storey construction with the inner courtyard, the external staircase, the bontzo and the volto.
In our village there are paths that start through cobbled streets, ideal for a walk-in nature. One of them crosses the mountain forest and leads to its top; where you will find the Pantokrator Monastery built in the 14th century, with a magnificent view of the sea towards the Adriatic.
Here you will see a vertical chasm cave that according to the inhabitants of the island communicates with the sea, theHole of Pelaos.
You can also head to the beaches of Halikounas, του Paramonas και στο Prasoudi. Do not forget to visit Lake Korission, the most important wetland on the island.
The area is also suitable for excursions, such as a visit to the Byzantine castle of Gardikiwith an octagonal shape and three gates, which dates to the time of the Epirus Despotate (13th century) and in which there are remains of ancient temples.
The village is located 23 km from Corfu town and 13 km from Corfu International Airport.
